Green Shag Wool Rug

Shag Rugs

Shag is carpet that has a thick pile. Shag is the softest and the cushiest of the rugs. The pile is so thickly created that it is virtually impenetrable.

Shag rugs are made by inserting a rug hook into a strong backing of burlap (used most), linen, monks cloth, or hard plastic. There are lots of tiny holes in the backing. You insert the rug hook through the backing and pull it back through to create a loop. This loop style is called shag.

Shag was made popular in the 1970s with fluorescent looking green and blue carpets. The look was cool then, but is talked about as a joke nowadays. For that reason, shag is often thought of as outdated and a little obscure.

In recent years, shag has made a huge comeback with it being very popular. The reason is that people love the thick pile. There is nothing more cushiony than the feeling of shag. The colors of today are more earthen tones. In wool rug styles shag is in various shades of blues, reds, greens, browns, beiges, and whites.
